When my second nephew’s first birthday landed in October, a Halloween costume party felt like the perfect fit. We went with the theme “The Spooky One,” and it was such a fun way to celebrate both his milestone and the season.
Invitations & Assets
For the party materials, we wanted to capture the magic of Halloween in a way that still felt age-appropriate — more whimsical than scary since most of the guests were little ones. We leaned into playful details like friendly ghosts and soft, seasonal colors.
Our themed collection includes:
Each piece can be purchased individually or as a bundle, depending on what your event calls for.
Photo Backdrop
A first birthday always deserves a great photo backdrop, and this theme offers so many creative ways to bring it to life.
Start with a wooden arch, paint it white, and drape it with webbing for a “mummy” effect. Add a few whimsical eyes to give it personality. It’s simple, playful, and makes for a perfect focal point.
If you want something different, create a cauldron balloon display where balloons appear to bubble out of a large cauldron. It’s eye-catching and ties beautifully into the theme.
Table Settings & Decor
For parties with young kids, easy cleanup is key — so I like to keep most of the setup disposable but still elevated.
We used ghost-shaped plates that perfectly matched the theme, paired with scalloped black napkins and black silverware. To continue the ghost motif, I added a ghost platter and ghost charcuterie cups, which are an easy grab-and-go option.
We also used mini cauldrons for serving, where guests could assemble their own snack cup or trail mix — a fun touch for both kids and adults. Personalized place cards brought in a thoughtful detail, and a black and white spiderweb table cloth pulled everything together, making the ghost plates really stand out.
Sometimes, it’s the small touches that make the biggest difference. 3D bat wall decals are still one of my favorite ways to instantly make a space feel festive — they look great on walls, around an entryway, or even near the kitchen vent hood.
Another easy addition is white balloons with black eye appliques — quick to assemble, and they instantly add a fun, ghostly feel to the space.
Games & Activities
Our printable scavenger hunt is such a hit with kids and can easily be adapted based on the age group.
Here are some items that also double as decor — a skull, cauldron, webbing (same as above), and this set that has the black cat, jack-o-lantern, ghost all in one and this set with the witches hat and broom.
Party Favors
For take-home treats, we pulled together a few simple but themed options that pair perfectly with our gift tag:
S’mores bags: Mini Hershey bars, graham crackers, and ghost marshmallows — a cozy nod to fall.
Pretzel broomsticks: Use pretzel rods to look like a broom stick - a healthier option!
White chocolate pretzels: White chocolate pretzels that resemble skeleton bones - my personal favorite!
Final Touches
Don’t forget the music! We’re a Sonos family, and this Eras speaker is compact but still makes an impact.
All custom designs featured here can be purchased on Etsy, and we’ve pulled together an Amazon list for easy shopping.
I hope this inspires your own version of a playful, not-too-spooky Halloween celebration—perfect for little ones and fun for every guest who loves a touch of whimsy in the season. Happy hosting!
